Cindy McCain says goodbye as John McCain is buried alongside his lifelong friend at a solemn Annapolis funeral.

John McCain was laid to rest on Sunday in a private service at the U.S. Naval Academy attended by his family, close friends and former classmates. McCain, who died on August 25 at the age 81 after a year-long struggle against brain cancer, was interred in a private ceremony in the academy's grassy cemetery overlooking the Severn River, in Annapolis, Maryland. His flag-draped casket arrived on a horse drawn caisson, and a fly-past saw pilots pay tribute with the missing man formation. McCain was buried next to his old friend Admiral Chuck Larson (top inset). His family followed his casket from a private service (top right) and his tearful widow Cindy (center) rested her head on his casket as she said her last goodbyes. Sons Jimmy and Jack, who wore his father's Navy wings in tribute, (bottom right) embraced as their father was interred with full military honors. Senator McCain's burial plot is seen bottom inset.
