School groundsman, 46, with weeks to live, is awarded $289M by jury that found weedkiller Roundup DID give him lymphoma

Dewayne Johnson, 46, who has just weeks to live, was on Friday awarded $250 million in punitive damages, plus nearly $40 million in compensatory damages, bringing the total to $289 million. The jury announced its ruling that the weedkiller did cause his cancer and that its manufacturer Monsanto 'acted with malice, oppression or fraud and should be punished for its conduct’. Addressing a press conference on Friday evening, top, Johnson thanked his legal team, his wife, Araceli, and three sons. ‘I’m glad to be here to help, this case is way bigger than me,’ he said. Johnson’s wife works two jobs for 14 hours a day, and was not able to attend court due to her commitments, according to lawyer Brent Wisner. The verdict could open the door to hundreds of further cases, although Monsanto plans to appeal. Johnson will not receive the compensation until the appeal is over, but his lawyers hope that will happen before he dies. Picture bottom: Johnson’s back and hands that were left covered in lesions.
