During an appearance at TMZ Live on Tuesday, the 40-year-old rapper made flippant remarks that slavery appeared to be 'a choice.'

He was immediately taken to task over his comments live in the TMZ newsroom by a staffer Van Lathan and the ordeal drew quick and harsh reaction on Twitter.

The viral hashtag #IfSlaveryWasAChoice surfaced online and immediately started trending as social media users mocked Kanye's views.

Many used the hashtag to post memes showcasing what it might look like if slavery was a choice.

West later tried to explain himself on Twitter as he criticized the media coverage of his remarks.

'The reason why I brought up the 400 years point is because we can't be mentally imprisoned for another 400 years. We need free thought now. Even the statement was an example of free thought,' he tweeted.
