SANCTUARY ASIA Sanctuary’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2017 is Biplab Hazra for his image ‘Hell is Here'
SEARING flames scorch the tender skin of a baby elephant as yet another confrontation between jeering crowds and these stately creatures erupts into violence.Blazing tar balls and loud fireworks only add to the calf’s terror in the fiery confusion.
With the calf’s screams filling the jungle air, the stoic mother braves the mob’s fury to guide her offspring back into the jungle and far away from a conflict that increasingly blights their daily lives.
This compelling portrait of two elephants facing the wrath of rural mobs has won the top award in India’s most prestigious nature photography competition.
Titled Hell is Here, the photograph was taken by Biplab Hazra in the Bankura district of West Bengal and is an all too poignant snapshot of how elephants and humans are increasingly at loggerheads for space in a vanishing world.
