Temperatures will plunge to -4C TONIGHT before soaring to 60F in time for Halloween

The Met Office had forecast a near-nationwide first frost of the season for Monday morning, with lows down to -4C in Scotland, -1C in England and 2C in southern England. But the temperatures will warm up again on Tuesday to around 15C - proving to be a mainly dry and mild evening for trick-or-treaters. Thousands of families in coastal towns, however, were on sandbag alert on Sunday morning after high tides blown by strong onshore winds sent the sea surging over defence walls along the east coast, including a sea wall in Seaham, County Durham (pictured).
