Violent protests broke out after verdict in Panchkula, northern India, leaving 29 dead and 200 injured

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, 50, (left) known as 'the guru in bling' due to his flamboyant appearance, has been found guilty of two sexual assaults which took place at the headquarters of his Dera Sacha Sauda group in 2002. Thousands of members of Dera Sacha Sauda had descended on the northern city of Panchkula ahead of the verdict, and when it was announced, violence broke out, killing at least 29 and injuring some 200. Followers threw stones and torched vehicles as they clashed with paramilitary and police forces, attacked journalists and set fire to government buildings.
