Prince Nikolai of Denmark celebrates his 18th birthday as he gets set to take on the role of Europe's most eligible royal

The royal is the eldest grandchild of Queen Margarethe and Prince Henrik, and is the child of her younger son Prince Joachim and his ex-wife Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg. Earlier this year, his father admitted he couldn't believe how quickly his son (inset, aged six,) has grown up.

With Harry looking ready to settle down with Meghan Markle a vacancy for the role of Europe's most eligible prince is well and truly open.

And it looks like a contender has been found in the form of Prince Joachim of Denmark who celebrates his 18th birthday today.

The royal is the eldest grandchild of Queen Margarethe and Prince Henrik, and is the child of her younger son Prince Joachim and his ex-wife Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg.

To celebrate the big day, Queen Margarethe is throwing a party on the royal yacht Dannebrog this evening, attended by members of the Danish royal family and Nicolai's mother Alexandra.

Prince Nikolai of Denmark turns 18 today and will celebrate with family members on board the royal yacht later this evening
