Terrified victims trapped inside the inferno exchanged heart-breaking final messages with their families.
Some pleaded to be rescued as the smoke filled their homes. Others simply wanted to say goodbye.
A mother who was trapped with her three children told friends as the flames engulfed them: ‘Goodbye, I’m not going to make it.’
Nura Jemal and her husband Hashim Kedir were among countless families told to wait in their flat for rescue by the emergency services as the blaze ripped through the block. She called friends and said there was no escape, saying: ‘The fire is here, I’m dying.’
Her friend Asyia Assani said: ‘The lifts were not in use and the stairwell was filled with thick smoke so they were told it was not safe to leave. The emergency services said to stay inside and put a blanket at the bottom of the front door to block smoke getting in, and we’ll come and get you out.
‘But when my friend got in contact again at a bit past 2am she knew she could not escape. She said, “Goodbye, I’m not going to make it. Please forgive me.” Those were the last words we heard from her.
‘No one has been able to get in touch with her since. Everyone is desperate for news. They are a wonderful family.’
Another friend, Hibo Yussuf, said Nura and her two sons, aged six and 11, were still missing but said that her daughter was believed to have been rescued and was being treated in hospital. It was not known if the children’s father, taxi driver Mr Kedir, escaped the blaze.
Another parent, injured father Saber Neda, is feared dead after he told his family to flee without him as he feared he would slow them down. The 57-year-old told his wife Shakila, 45, and their 24-year-old son Farhad to leave him in their top-floor flat, saying: ‘You have to get out.’ They survived but he is among the missing.
Mr Neda called a relative at around 2.20am to say there had been ‘no help’, and his family have not been able to contact him since then.
Father-of-four Tony Disson was also seen screaming at the window of his tenth-floor flat: ‘Tell my boys I love them.’
Friends made desperate Facebook appeals for Mariem Elgwahry, 27, pictured, a marketing manager who lived with her mother Suhar on the 19th floor of the block.
They said they had been unable to contact either woman since the early hours of yesterday.
And there was an appeal for information on Italian couple Gloria Trevisan and Marco Gottardi, who moved into a 23rd-floor flat three months ago. Cousin Pamela Pizziolo said: ‘I don’t have any news from them since last night and their mobile phones are off. I’m praying God they make it out safely.’

Rania Ibrham, 30, has not been heard from since uploading the video in the small hours. She can be seen seeking help in a smoke-filled corridor before returning to her flat and looking down from her balcony. She can also be heard praying.
