People prepare for hottest day of the year as temperature soars with 91F Bank Holiday heat on the way

Today was the hottest day of the year so far in the UK, with temperatures set to rocket day-by-day until they smash through the 90F barrier during the Bank Holiday weekend. Records were quickly broken this morning, after a temperature of 24.9C (76.8F) was recorded in Portmadog, making it the warmest day of the year in Wales. However it is expected to get much hotter throughout the UK during the day, with clear skies likely to lead to many parts of the country basking in temperatures higher than the year record of 26.6C (79.8F). Meanwhile, a glorious blast of weekend sunshine could deliver the hottest May temperatures since the Second World War. A plume of warm continental air means it may hit 30C (86F) on Saturday, making it by far the hottest day of the year so far.
