Michael Steven Sandford, 21, was arrested last June after lunging for an officer’s gun at a Las Vegas campaign rally for Mr Trump, who was the Republican presidential candidate at the time.
Sandford, who also asked Mr Trump for an autograph during the event, according to court documents, told police he travelled to the rally with the intention of assassinating TrumpSandford had rented a 9mm pistol and practiced shooting it on a firing range the day before the incident.
The 21-year-old, who has been diagnosed with psychotic mental illness, pleaded guilty to being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm and disrupting an official function.
He told the judge at his hearing in September: “I tried to take a gun from a policeman to shoot someone with, and I’m pleading guilty.”
