Mr Umunna was the early frontrunner to replace Ed Miliband in 2015, but unexpectedly withdrew from the race just a few days after he threw his hat into the ring.

He explained that he was uncomfortable with the level of pressure and scrutiny that came with being a leadership candidate, but remains a popular and prominent member of the party.

In February of this year, the 38-year-old appeared on Sky News and delivered a powerful speech on the future of his party which some said sounded like the start of a leadership bid.

He said that he had “no doubt” that Labour could reconnect with its core values “and show we are fit for government”.

When asked whether he saw himself as a leader Mr Umunna was quick to deny that he was launching a new bid, but said: “I want to play a big role in a future Labour government, how that turns out in the future is anyone's guess.”

He now stands at 18/1 odds with Betfair.
