The London mayor has had to clarify remarks about there being “no difference” between Scottish nationalism and racism after an SNP backlash.
Sadiq Khan has rewritten a speech to clarify that Scottish nationalists are not racist after he suggested that there was “no difference” between Scottish nationalism and dividing people by their race or religion.
Ahead the London mayor’s appearance at the Scottish Labour conference in Perth on Saturday morning, Khan tweeted his intended speech in which he made the remarks about Scottish nationalism and racism.
The speech tweeted by the London mayor provoked a furious reaction from the Scottish National Party (SNP), with first minister Nicola Sturgeon and several SNP MPs tweeting their condemnation of Khan’s remarks.
Khan’s initial speech read: “There’s no difference between those who try to divide us on the basis of whether we’re English or Scottish and those who try to divide us on the basis of our background, race or religion.”
