Two people die in separate crashes on icy roads as freezing fog claims its first victims after overnight temperatures plunged to -7C
UPDATED At least 30 vehicles smashed into each other in scenes of carnage which stretched for more than half a mile (pictured). The woman driver was declared dead while another man and woman were taken to a hospital's major trauma unit. Up to 15 more casualties were treated at the scene of the horrifying crash on the A40 near Witney in Oxfordshire. Photographs showed the mangled wreckage of several of the cars involved, with debris strewn across the road. Meanwhile a 60-year-old van driver was killed in the early hours after crashing into a tree in Highclere, Hampshire. And rescue crews launched a desperate search for two missing fishermen thrown overboard in rough seas. One survivor was found today after he was spotted on the upturned hull by a passing vessel off the Kent coast.
