New Year's Eve terror threat puts Western cities on lockdown with heavily-armed police and soldiers on patrol
Major cities across the world have beefed up security for New Year's Eve parties today over fears of a devastating terror attack.
Armed police with submachine guns will be visible in cities including London, New York, Sydney and Berlin as tens of thousands gather to welcome in 2017.
A ring of steel will surround many cities with protective fences in place in key areas along with armed vehicles packed with security personnel. Medics will also be on standby in case of an attack.
Record numbers of police will patrol Britain’s streets to protect the public throughout the New Year’s Eve celebrations.
