So tense was the atmosphere between the sparring pair, host Alfred Smith IV attempted to break the ice with a questionable joke. Welcoming guests to the dinner, a staple fixture in presidential campaigns, Smith joked: 'I have no doubt that our guests tonight are up to the task.
