Summer goes out with a bang! Flash floods, thunder and lightning hit Britain overnight as temperatures plummet by 10C - and it's here to stay

Roads and properties have been hit by severe flooding in parts of central London, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Surrey, Hertfordshire and Greater London after a band of torrential rain moved in from the Channel overnight. Dramatic pictures show cars submerged in floodwater, Tube stations flooded and lightning bolts over the capital. The Met Office has now issued amber weather warnings of rain for today, and the Environment Agency has published a string of flood alerts (bottom right) covering much of London and the south east. Pictured: Dramatic pictures from Didcot railway station in Oxfordshire show the ticket barriers, stairwells and shop submerged in murky floodwater today (centre and right), while footage shows cars wading through flooding on the M25 (left). Lightning bolts are seen over Surrey during the night (inset left).
