TV sports presenter and Team GB ambassador Charlie Webster lies in a coma in a Rio hospital after being struck down with a rare form of malaria
TV presenter Charlie Webster is fighting for her life in a Brazilian hospital after contracting a rare strain of malaria on her way to the Olympic Games. The 33-year-old former Sky Sports News anchor (inset bottom) is reportedly in a coma and on a life support machine in Rio de Janeiro. Her family, including her mother and brother, have flown to be by her side. A friend told The Sun: 'Charlie is
battling for survival at the moment - everyone is distraught.' Webster was one of the official presenters for Team GB at the Olympics (right, in Rio) and was working alongside fellow ambassadors for a number of different broadcasters. Webster became ill during the opening ceremony, having arrived in the country the night before. She initially put it down to dehydration and felt well enough to post pictures from hospital on social media (pictured centre and inset top). But her condition has since deteriorated. Last December Webster split amicably from her actor boyfriend of one year Allen Leech (together left), who played Tom Branson in Downton Abbey, with the pair wanting to focus on their respective careers.
