England fan fights for his life after being kicked in the head and dozens more are injured during third day of brutal battles between hundreds of English supporters and Russian 'Ultra' thugs armed with knives in Marseille

As the war between Russian and English fans continues on the streets of Marseille the first serious victim of the bloodshed lies in hospital in a critical condition. Shocking pictures show the man's face beaten to a pulp with drops of blood covering the pavement around him, as riot police perform CPR and place him in the recovery position. Witnesses say the supporter was 'doing nothing' when Russian hooligans set upon him, punching him and kicking him in the head. The Provence newspaper reported: 'An England supporter is in between life and death. The man who is in his 50s, who received a number of blows to the head, is in a critical condition. He suffered a number of injuries.' News of the attack comes as police step up their presence in the Old Port District, using water cannon to blast jets at fans in order separate rival gangs onto different streets.
