Boris Johnson QUITS Tory leadership battle after Brexit ally Michael Gove abandons him to launch his own bid for Downing Street with a devastating parting shot

Boris Johnson dramatically quit the Tory leadership battle after Michael Gove delivered a mortal blow to his hopes of reaching Downing Street today. The Justice Secretary (pictured left leaving home today) said the former London mayor (centre) could not 'provide the leadership or build the team for the task ahead'. He added: 'I have come reluctantly to the conclusions Boris cannot provide the leadership or build the team for the task ahead. I have therefore decided to put my name forward for the leadership.' In a series of devastating blows for Mr Johnson, Leader of the House Chris Grayling has also come out in support of arch rival Theresa May and key backer Nick Boles has defected to Mr Gove's campaign. Mrs May (pictured right launching her campaign today) took a swipe at Mr Johnson as she formally announced she is a candidate amid polls giving her a clear lead in the race.
