Actress Sheridan Smith rushed to hospital after collapse at exclusive retreat

The actress Sheridan Smith was reportedly rushed to hospital after collapsing at an exclusive retreat.

Smith, 34, was taken by ambulance from Champneys Health Spa to Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford on Sunday.

Earlier this month she was forced to withdraw from the West End show Funny Girl for up to a month
after suffering from “stress and exhaustion”.

It followed what the theatre called a “very difficult” period for the actress, which has seen her engage in public spats with critics, press and fans on the social media site Twitter.

A source told The Sun: “Sheridan has been at Champneys to undergo total rest while she’s been recuperating during her time off from Funny Girl.

“She has been in a better place and things have been looking up, but on Sunday there was a medical emergency and ambulances were called.

“But she is doing much better and it has nothing to do with stress or her state of mind.”

A South East Coast Ambulance spokesman said: “We were called just before 5.20pm on Sunday following reports of a woman in need of medical attention.

“A car from South Central Ambulance Service was sent, along with an ambulance which we assisted with.

“She was assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to hospital as a priority.” She was later released and was said to have made a full recovery.

Smith had received critical acclaim for her performances as Fanny Brice, the role made famous by Barbara Streisand in the 1968 film version of Funny Girl.

She missed out on the best actress and best drama awards for The C-Word, in which she played the terminally ill cancer blogger Lisa Lynch to widespread critical acclaim.

Comments on social media about her disappointment, caught by the television cameras, prompted Smith to tweet: “When will u stop bullying? I had the best night in memory of my girl Lisa Lynch!”

She later attacked the media, stating: “Well done press! U let me down, the cast and everyone who spent money to see me”, before apologising to fans for pulling out of the show, saying: “Sorry! Sorry I’m not strong enough”.
