Osborne to scrap 'Victorian' 3.30pm school home time: Chancellor to unveil huge shake-up of education system that will see millions of pupils stay an hour later for extra lessons, sports or art
From next year, hundreds of thousands of secondary pupils all across Britain will stay in school for at least an hour longer each day doing extra lessons, sports or art to drive up standards. Head teachers will be invited to bid for extra funding to provide the activities and pay overtime to staff. To the fury of teaching unions, the Government will also force all schools to become academies by 2020 - bringing an end to decades of local authority control.
