Church caretaker 'died after he was arrested by seven police officers, bound in handcuffs, leg restraints and a face mask then left in a police cell'

Schizophrenic Thomas Orchard, 32 (inset), was put in handcuffs and leg restraints and had an 'emergency response belt' put across his mouth after being arrested following a public order incident in Exeter, Devon. Shocking CCTV footage released today shows the mentally-ill church caretaker being carried face-down by the belt by police (left) before being left motionless on the floor of his prison cell (centre and top right) at Heavitree Road Police Station in Exeter, Devon. Mr Orchard suffered a cardiac arrest 12 minutes after being left by police officers and died a week later in hospital from brain damage and asphyxia. Experienced custody sergeant Jan Kingshott, 44, and civilian detention officers Simon Tansley, 38, and Michael Marsden, 55, are now on trial at Bristol Crown Court accused of unlawful act manslaughter.
