The last man standing: Defiant couple are the ONLY people left on their street as bulldozers move in to demolish all 39 houses on their estate - but they insist they're going nowhere
Alexander Cooper (main image, outside his home) is the only resident still living on Woodside Avenue in Newcastle after an 18 month stand-off with the council that has seen all 39 of his neighbours move out. Newcastle City Council plans to demolish the site after reports of structural problems with the two rows of terraces, which back on to a former shipyard on the River Tyne and an industrial estate. Residents in the seven privately owned properties and 33 council houses were offered the value of their home plus an additional 10 per cent or a rehousing deal. But Mr Cooper, who lives in the middle of one of the terraces, turned the offers down, admitting he thinks it's a bad deal and it wouldn't buy him something 'as good as what he's got'. The area has become the target for vandals and thieves (bottom right) since residents moved out and he's welcomed the bulldozers (top right) moving in last week. Mr Cooper said: 'I'm not going anywhere. I'll be staying here right to the end.'
