Angelina, a UN Special Envoy for Refugees, had wanted to rescue three brothers she met on a mission to the war-torn country.
But her husband put his foot down as they already have six children.
A source said: “On one solo trip Angelina met three Syrian orphan siblings.
“They were all brothers. The middle child could speak some English.
“The oldest was very quiet but never left Angie’s side during the visit.
“Angelina was heartbroken to learn the three of them had seen their father taken away by Syrian soldiers and their home was bombed. And they lost their mother in the bombing.”
Angelina, 40, and 51-year-old Brad, whose three eldest children are adopted, are currently completing the adoption red tape.
The source added: “Angie wanted to adopt all three, but when she got back to the United States and told Brad about it, he said no. Going from six children to nine was just way too much."
“Brad was concerned about how it would impact their other kids."
“Angie didn’t put up a fight. She knew it just wouldn’t work."
“But they compromised at adopting one.”
The actor, 49, said: “I’m organising that with authorities in Marseille. If you house someone who does not have the right to work, then they need to eat too.”
