Tragic Jamyla Bolden was reading her book in her mum's bed when she was fatally shot.
He mum was also shot in the leg but survived.
The girl's gran – who did not wish to be named – described how she ran into the bedroom after hearing gun fire.
“I was holding her the whole time,” she told the Post-Dispatch.
“I kept holding and holding her. I still have her blood on my hands. She was still breathing. I was telling her to just breathe.”
Police were called to the home and two officers tried desperately to keep the little girl alive.
They confrimed the bullets were fired from outside their home in Ferguson, in Missouri.
"I never in a million years thought that I'd be laying my daughter to rest," said James, the young girl's distraught dad.
The St Louis County coroner confirmed the schoolgirl died of gunshot wounds.
