Five dead and 65 injured as train carrying 243 derails and rips apart in Philadelphia: Seven cars crash off the tracks en route from Washington to New York as mayor calls scene a 'disastrous mess'
An Amtrak train crashed in Philadelphia Tuesday night prompting a mass causality incident that claimed the lives of five people. Train 188 was traveling from Washington, D.C., to New York City when it crashed around 9:20pm as it went into a turn just a few miles outside of 30th Street Station. The train, which had been carrying 238 passengers and five crew members at the time of the crash, had 10 cars derail in total, seven of which came entirely off the tracks. In addition to the fatalities, over 50 people were injured and six were in critical condition. 'This was an absolute disastrous mess,' said Mayor Michael Nutter of Philadelphia. 'I have never seen anything like it in my life.'
