THIS is the disturbing moment a crazed man carrying a meat cleaver attacked a group of defenceless school children.
The shocking images show the man ready to bring down his weapon on the young girl's head – but no one died in the bloody and frenzied attack on a primary school in China.
However, one child was left in a coma while another seven were taken to hospital suffering injuries.
Other youngsters, aged between just five and seven, are receiving psychiatric counselling after the man attacked the school in Macheng City in China's Hubei Province.
Police rushed to the school after reports that a man was lashing out at harmless children and managed to capture the 35-year-old before he killed anyone.
The man apparently had no motive for his violent spree that could see him face the death penalty if he is found to be of sane mind after a psychological evaluation.
A police spokesman said of the attack: "It seems he slashed at them rather than chopping hard, which would have killed most of them instantly.
"The scenes of panic at the school were indescribable.
"These youngsters had no idea what was going on."
The incident is just the latest in several violent attacks against children in China in recent years.
A spate of five incidents in 2010 saw 17 people killed – 15 of them children – and more than 80 wounded.
Last March, a man killed two relatives and then slashed 11 people, including six children, outside a school in Shanghai.
