Trudy Nelder pocketed the handouts after pretending to be single with no income.
But the 42-year-old sponger was living with husband Jeffery, who had a job with for the local council.
Nelder got a 12-month suspended sentence and was ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work after admitting fraud.
“Lenient sentences will do little to discourage others”

But she persuaded a judge at Gloucester Crown Court to ditch the work order after saying she was unwell.
Recorder Michael Gibney replaced it with a three-month curfew.
But Nelder, of Chelten-ham, Glos said that was inconvenient at week-ends because she has to look after her children aged 11 to 21.
The judge agreed to a night curfew on weekdays only, admitting: “This court has taken a lenient approach.”
But Jonathan Isaby, chief executive of the Taxpayers’ Alliance, said: “The authorities need to clamp down hard on benefits cheats.
"Lenient sentences will do little to discourage others who might be tempted to take taxpayers for a ride.”
