LOVE-cheat Ryan Giggs took over as Manchester United boss last night as sacked David Moyes lost out on £20million in pay-off cash.
“I get frustrated in training if they are slack, or if they come in late.”
As he prepared for the hotseat, axed Moyes was dealt a hammer blow with his compensation deal slashed by £20m.
He would normally have pocketed £25m with five years left on his contract. But his failure to qualify for the Champions League triggered an “ejector seat” clause in his deal.
That allowed United’s owners the Glazer family to get rid of him for £5m, which is 12 months salary and peanuts in terms of pay-offs at football’s highest level.
The clause had been inserted into Moyes’s contract last summer when the idea of United failing to make the Champions League seemed absurd.
The former Everton manager, 50, was said to have been left “shocked and angry” at being a double loser.
He was “executed” at dawn, slipping into the United training ground at 5am to clear his desk before being shown the door by Chief Executive Ed Woodward, 40.
The end of his dismal 10-month reign was confirmed in a 33-word statement on the club’s website that praised Moyes for his “honesty and integrity” while revealing he would be succeeded by Giggs.
Married Giggs, 40, will be interim manager while Old Trafford chiefs search for a big name. He had an eight-year fling with his brother’s wife Natasha Giggs, 31, as well as a romance with Big Brother babe Imogen Thomas, 31.
Giggs’s appointment became the subject of a barrage of jokes on Twitter, with fans taking the mickey out of his string of love scandals.
Andy Gibbons wrote: “Ryan Giggs’ first role as @ManUtd Manager will be to assess the fitness of his players’ wives and girlfriends.”
Another wrote: “Giggs is in charge of picking the team for Saturday, based upon players’ wives past performances!”
Last night experts reckoned Moyes’s doomed spell in charge of one of the world’s biggest football clubs could have cost United up to £100m.
They will lose out on £25m for not playing in the Champions League next season, on top of losses in sponsorship, broadcast rights and merchandise sales.
But United’s share price rose as soon as the New York Stock Exchange opened following the news that Moyes had been given the boot.
The player-coach, who was famously caught out having a string of affairs, revealed he would be as tough as legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
Talking about his ambitions, he said: “I believe I can be a good manager. I think I’ll enjoy it.
“I think when players come up from the reserves, they can be surprised. They think I’m quite placid, so they get a bit of a shock.
“I do feel fatherly towards them. I like helping them out – but sometimes I might lose my temper and snap at them.“I do feel fatherly towards them. I like helping them out – but sometimes I might lose my temper and snap at them”Ryan Giggs, new manager of Manchester United
